Built by someone who has sat on both sides of the table.
Mammoth Health Innovation was founded by Dan Wasserman after 16 years working at the intersection of biomedical research and commercial strategy. C.H.I.E.F.S.™ is the framework he wished had existed when he was advising ventures that kept failing for the same preventable reasons.
Why Mammoth. Why C.H.I.E.F.S. Why now.
The name comes from the Woolly Mammoth — a creature that was well-adapted, highly capable, and ultimately disappeared not because of any fundamental flaw, but because the world it was built for changed faster than it could respond. Dan saw the same pattern in health innovation: ventures with genuinely strong science, failing for entirely commercial reasons.
Most of the health innovations that fail, fail for reasons that were visible long before they became fatal. The problem is that nobody was looking — or if they were, they didn't have a framework that told them what to look at.
After 16 years in biomedical commercialization — working with MedTech companies, digital health platforms, biotech spinouts, and the hospitals and investors that evaluate them — Dan developed C.H.I.E.F.S. as a structured answer to a consistent problem. Not a consulting framework built in a boardroom. A practical tool built on pattern recognition from hundreds of real ventures, real deals, and real failures.
Mammoth Health Innovation operates out of Thornhill, Ontario. It works with innovators and institutions across Canada, the United States, and internationally. Every C.H.I.E.F.S. evaluation is conducted personally by Dan — not delegated, not outsourced, not templated. The founder's experience is the product.
Five principles that guide every engagement.
Not values statements. Operational commitments that show up in every evaluation, every report, every conversation.
Honest over comfortable
A C.H.I.E.F.S. report tells you what's true — not what's encouraging. If a score is low, the report says why and what to do about it. Founders and institutions rely on the honesty, not the encouragement.
Structured over subjective
Every evaluation uses the same 50 criteria. Every score is derived from the same framework. The output isn't a consultant's opinion — it's a structured read that two different evaluators would reach the same conclusions from.
Useful over impressive
The goal of every report is a founder who knows exactly what to do next. Not a document that looks thorough. A document that drives decisions.
Fast enough to matter
48-hour delivery isn't a marketing promise. It's a commitment that the evaluation will arrive when it's still useful — not weeks after the conversation it was meant to inform has already happened.
Independent always
Mammoth takes no equity in ventures it evaluates, no referral fees from investors, and no success fees tied to outcomes. Independence is what makes the evaluation worth having.
16 years at the intersection of science and commercial strategy.
Dan's background spans the full commercialization lifecycle — from early-stage IP development through strategic partnerships, institutional sales, investor relations, and exit transactions.
He has worked directly with MedTech founders, biotech spinouts, digital health companies, hospital systems, health accelerators, and institutional investors across North America and internationally.
C.H.I.E.F.S. is the product of that experience — distilled into a framework that any health innovator can use to understand where they stand and what to do next.
Biomedical Commercialization
16+ years working specifically in the health innovation space — not generic startup or business advisory.
Both Sides of the Table
Experience advising innovators seeking capital and institutions evaluating ventures — a dual perspective built into C.H.I.E.F.S.
Canada, US & International
Engagements across North America and international markets, with particular depth in Canadian health innovation ecosystems.
MedTech, Digital Health & Biotech
Framework built across all major health innovation categories — not optimized for one sector at the expense of others.
“Health innovation that works should reach the people who need it. The commercial failures that stand in the way are preventable. That's the entire reason C.H.I.E.F.S. exists.”
Dan Wasserman · Founder, Mammoth Health Innovation
A capable creature. A preventable end. A lesson worth learning.
The Woolly Mammoth was one of the most successful large mammals in Earth's history — highly capable, well-adapted, dominant in its environment. It didn't disappear because it was weak. It disappeared because the world changed and the adaptation didn't keep pace.
Dan chose the name because it captures the central challenge facing health innovators: the science is strong, the clinical case is real, and the failure is commercial — not because the innovation doesn't work, but because the commercial infrastructure around it wasn't built in time.
Mammoth Health Innovation exists to close that gap.
